David’s client is a rapidly growing innovative IT hardware company, turnover circa £500K, that currently spends significant sums of money with outside training agencies. Despite it's reputation for training excellence the business faces significant staff turnover which in turn leads to additional recruitment costs.
Now due to the growing competitive pressures the business aims to trim its training budgets whilst maintaining an effective continual professional development programme with an additional target of reducing staff turnover.
Objectives
To develop a robust coaching system within the organisation which:
• Establishes a coaching policy
• Creates a coaching team
• Links appraisal systems with coaching
• Takes a holistic approach to developing staff
Actions:
To coach the client through the process of establishing a workable agreed coaching policy by:
• Identifying the needs of the policy
• Discussion with relevant stakeholders
• Establishing and publicising the importance of the policy
To develop a training programme for line managers in the skills of coaching focussing on:
• Identifying current situation
• Determining outcomes
• Rapport building
• Listening and questioning skills
• Goal setting
• Accountability
To empower the client with skills to enable the coaching system to become sustainable through developing:
• Confidence
• Leadership skills and
• Results focused solutions
Results
The client has reduced its training costs by 25%, refocused professional development on the needs of the business and seen staff turnover reduce by 32% enabling recruitment costs to fall by an estimated £8,000.
And so..
The client is now able to quickly respond to training needs and has seen the business’ ability to respond to rapidly changing circumstances significantly improve. Consequently there is greater efficiency and improved margins as key staff are developed and skills retained within the business.
